Alan started as a junior Exhibitionist at the Royal Manchester College of Music and at the age of 17 was a full time student. After leaving college he became a pro trombone player in Kent and returned to Yorkshire to join The Black Dyke Mills Band under the musical direction of Dr Roy Newsome, Geoffrey Brand  and Major Peter Parkes . After leaving Black Dyke he joined the James Shepherd Versatile Brass.  After 6yrs with VB he turned back to pro playing and teaching.He then  became involved in Marsden band who he had for 12yrs taking them from the 3rd section to Championship Section. After many great years he moved on and set out again on a trail of success with Uppermill Band taking them from the 4th section to 1st section.
From 1992 to 2004 he had 19 Wins 23 Podiums with Marsden plus great Whit Friday results, and from 2004 to 2016 ,23wins ,18, podiums with Uppermill.
He returned to Marsden in October 2016 and in March 2017 he won the 1st section area in yorkshire taking them immediately back into the ChampionShip Section .
He left Marsden in September 2018 again with 5 wins and 5 podiums to add to his remarkable contesting results..
November 2021 took the position of MD at Whitworth Vale Band after having the band in the 1980s. On returning they emeadiatly in January 2022 won Butlins Miners Contest and in March 2022 got promoted to the 2nd section , Buxton and Bolsover contests followed with again 2 great wins.  Alan left Whitworth in October 2022 to take the baton at Lindley Band  hopefully with the same
success. In 2017 he Joined the AoBBA organisation which has seen him adjudicating at many local contests, Whit Friday Marches,  Brighouse March Contest, Butlins Mineworkers Contest, South West Area Contest at Cheltenham and ,Lancashire Area Contest .
