Following previous generations as Salvation Army bandsmen, Dave spent years as Principal Cornet of the Coventry City S.A. band during which time he obtained a diploma for trumpet performance at the London College of Music and commenced his conducting career when leading a series of music schools in the United States.
Having played solo cornet for a number of Midlands – based championship section bands before starting a successful conducting career with Rolls-Royce (Coventry) Band, now known as the Jaguar Land Rover Band, Dave has won a number of entertainment contests, regional and national titles in all sections including taking JLR to the National finals and more recently the prestigious British Open. He was the very first winner of the Peter Parkes Memorial Trophy awarded to the winning conductor of the Bolsover Entertainment Contest and has also received the All England Masters Dedicated Service Award for services to the brass band movement.
Dave is frequently invited to train and conduct overseas bands, one of which is the highly successful Brass Band of Central Florida. In 2016 he won the National title with Brass Band Regensburg, Germany, and again in May 2019 the Challenge Section of the European Brass Band Championships held in Montreux.
In 2018 Dave relinquished the role of M.D.at JLR after more than 30 years, taking up the position of Life President. He still maintains an active role in brass banding in the UK and Europe and now works as a freelance conductor.
