Derek Renshaw
Derek began playing the cornet at the age of 10.During his playing career he played with many brass bands including:
City of Sheffield Youth / Yorkshire Youth / Sheffield Recreation / Quaker Sutherland / Andrews Heat for Hire / Grimethorpe Colliery / Rockingham Colliery / Yorkshire Imperial Metals & Black Dyke Mills as well as ‘guesting’ for most of the top bands. Featured on many recordings both here and abroad as well as Radio and TV. A founder member of Harlequin Brass and The Brass Players.
Derek has been a Musical Director for over 40 years, having directed such bands as Oughtibridge / Holme Silver / Dodworth Colliery / City of Sheffield / Unite the Union / Yorkshire Imperial / Stannington and Deputy Conductor of Grimethorpe Colliery Band.
He is an extremely successful MD, particularly when it comes to competitions having numerous prizes under his belt including 4 Yorkshire Championship Titles and a Hat Trick of National Championship Titles.
In more recent years, Derek joined the Association of Brass Band Adjudicators (AoBBA) presiding over many competitions including The Manx Musical Festival, The Midlands Area Competition, The South of England Championships, Leicester Contest to name a few.
Under Dereks direction, Stannington Band was delighted when in 2016 they added to the bands history by winning both the Yorkshire Area 2nd Section and National Championships.
The second half of 2021 saw Derek take a break from conducting and return to playing, this time with Stannington Band. 2023 saw Derek return to the cornet section of Grimethorpe Colliery Band, enjoying an amazing 18 months, both as player and deputy conductor before eventually retiring from playing in the summer of 2024. Regardless of his ‘retirement status’ Derek is regularly approached to play again in addition to conducting.
