Robert began his playing under the tutelage of his Father in the Salvation Army. At the age of 19 Robert took the decision to leave the S.A. and took up the position of Solo Euphonium with the historically famous Gwaun Cae Gurwen Band. After a short spell at GCG Robert joined another famous Welsh band at Parc & Dare. Robert enjoyed tremendous success at Parc and as a result was head hunted by Major Arthur Kennedy to join the Cory Band, truly the pinnacle of Welsh banding. It was at Cory that Robert first developed his conducting skills, working with some of the UK's finest conductors. Upon relinquishing the Solo Euph seat at Cory to concentrate on work and family commitments, Robert went on to play for many bands in Wales including Cory's great rivals Tredegar. During his playing years Robert has won numerous Best Instrumentalist prizes. Regarded as one of the most experienced members of the Welsh banding community Robert is also widely travelled as a player, conductor and trainer throughout Europe and Scandinavia. In Wales Robert has conducted many bands including a spell as Resident Conductor at Tredegar, preparing them for a British Open appearance under the baton of James Scott.
Robert is still playing as Solo Euphonium with the Vintage Cory Band and is Musical Director for both the Ynyshir Band and the Rogerstone Community Band.
