Alan was born in Llanelli, South Wales and began his playing career on Trumpet with Ivor Davies and Flugel Horn with the Burry Port Town Band. Folowing a family move to Pembroke, Alan received a scholarship to study Trumpet at the Welsh College of Music and Drama with Tom Procter (Principal Trumpet BBC Welsh Orchestra). After school, Alan studied at University College of Wales, Aberystwyth and Goldsmith's College, University of London and played with both the National Youth Brass Band and Orchestra of Wales. Alan's current job is Director Of Music at RAF St Athan which he started in December 1986. One of the busiest Bands in the country with over eighty engagements a year and a full contesting diary in the First Section, Alan still makes time to guest conduct, compare and adjudicate throughout Wales and beyond.
