Alan is a Scottish conductor, composer, and music educator based in London. Originally from Aberdeen, he completed his undergraduate studies at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama before pursuing postgraduate studies at the Royal College of Music.
In the competitive arena, Alan's achievements include representing Scotland as a finalist in the NABBC Conductor Competition in 2003 and reaching the quarter-finals of the European Conductor Competition in Montreux in 2011, where he represented the UK.
Alan possesses a broad range of experience conducting brass bands both in the UK and internationally. His collaborations extend to ensembles such as the Aarhus Brass Band, Aveley & Newham Band, Bon-Accord Silver Band, Redbridge Brass, and Tokyo Brass Concord. From 2006 to 2013, he served as the musical director of Regent Brass, contributing to notable competitive successes, including promotion to the Championship Section, winning the London & Southern Counties Championship in 2013, and representing the South-East at the National Finals at the Royal Albert Hall. He resumed his role with Regent Brass in January 2021, renewing a successful musical partnership.
Alan is regularly engaged as an adjudicator for competitions and festivals both nationally and internationally. He holds executive positions in the Association of Brass Band Adjudicators and the Brass Band Conductor Association, where he represents members in the South-East region.
Beyond his work with brass bands, Alan serves as a trustee for the Elysium Orchestra and the 'Enfield Sounds Great' charitable trust. Additionally, he conducts the City of London Symphonic Winds and holds the position of Head of Academic Music at the Haberdashers' Boys’ School in Elstree, where he inspires and nurtures the next generation of musicians.
