Although now retired professionally, Barry Thompson taught children for over 30 years and worked as a peripatetic teacher with the Instrumental Music Service of the Wakefield Metropolitan District Council.

After studying harmony and conducting under George Thompson MBE, in 1969 Barry Thompson turned to conducting and has since enjoyed many notable successes in all sections of banding.
