Cliff started out playing cornet in the Salvation Army at the age of about 7. He then won a Junior Scholarship at the age of 11 to study Trumpet & Piano at the Royal College of Music, London. Since then, he has played with several orchestras, wind bands, Big Bands & pit orchestras and was principal trumpet with the South Bank Symphony Orchestra. Cliff also studied conducting under Laurence Leonard (who was principal cellist with the Halle Orchestra). He then moved to the Midlands and played Asst Principal cornet for many years with the Staffordshire Band and solo cornet for several years with the Jaguar Land Rover Band. Since moving to the Midlands, Cliff has been MD of two Brass Bands in the Midlands since about 1990 and is currently the MD of the Langley Band (1st Section) and has been since 2004.
