Gary became involved in banding at the age of 8 joining Cwmaman Institute Silver Band, playing a major role in the bands rise from 4th to Championship section as both player and secretary / chairman. During his playing career, Gary won the Grand Shield, played and prized in the British Open and played at the Royal Albert Hall for the National Championships of Great Britain. Playing accolades include 3 soloist prizes playing Soprano Cornet and representing Wales as a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Wales. In 2005 Gary become MD at Tylorstown band, a position still held today. During this period the band has seen unparalleled success. In 2010 Tylorstown were crowned 2nd Section Welsh Regional Champions and 2nd section National Champions of Great Britain, a double that was replicated in the 1st Section in 2013 as Tylorstown added the 1st Section Welsh Regional Championship and 1st section National Champion Band of Great Britain to its role of honour. Under Gary’s baton, Tylorstown band has been crowned Champion Band of Wales in 2011 and 2016, won the National Eisteddfod 2nd Section titles in 2006 and 2008, and the Championship Section in 2018, with podium finishes in the Miners Eisteddfod, Spring Festival, Pontin's Championships, and several in the Welsh leagues Championship Section. In 2009, in addition to his commitment with Tylorstown band, Gary became the MD of Llwydcoed Band. Under his direction the band gained National promotion from 3rd to the 1st Section, qualifying for the Lower Section National finals for 3 consecutive years 2010 – 2012, won the Welsh League 3rd and 2nd Section Titles, along with gaining wins in both the 3rd and 2nd Section National Eisteddfod of Wales. In 2012, Gary commenced adjudication training under the direction of AoBBA becoming an associate member in 2013.
