Gavin started playing euphonium at the age of 7 in the Deiniolen Youth Band. He moved to Tuba at 10, taking brass playing seriously following a lesson with Black Dyke legend Colin Aspinall. He quickly progressed to county groups and the NWYO. He became a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Wales, leading the Tubas for several courses.
At school Gavin won several awards, developing into an accomplished player. He graduated from the University of Salford, specialising in Musical Performance and Arts Administration.
Gavin has been a member of some of the finest bands including Leyland, Fairey, YBS, and Cory. Personal highlights include being awarded the City of Bergen Soloist Prize (2003 European Championships) and being a guest soloist at the International Tuba and Euphonium Association Conference. In 2003 Gavin was nominated as Player of the Year on 4barsrest and has been regularly chosen for their Band of the Year selection. As a soloist, performer and clinician Gavin has performed and held workshops across the world including Norway, Switzerland, USA, Australia, Brazil, Sweden, Italy, Germany and throughout the UK. As part of Black Dyke he is a regular soloist. As a conductor Gavin has led several bands to Regional and National successes.
An Arts Administrator, Gavin was a long-time executive member of Tŷ Cerdd, supporting community music and all national youth activities in Wales. Currently on the music panel for the National Eisteddfod of Wales, he adjudicated instrumental competitions at this prestigious event in 2019 and 2023.
In the academic world Gavin has been a tutor at Bangor University and at the University of Salford. He is currently Tuba tutor for the NYBBW and takes a lead role in the audition process.
Gavin is a Performance and Development Artist for Geneva Musical Instruments, and a Denis Wick Artist.
